Remember your first day?

Things have been going good in the new school, well at least for most of us. There's a new kid on the block. For the last couple of days his mom has been trying to bring him to school but he's been fighting it to the death. The first day, he cried so much that we almost had to evacuate the building due to flooding. Mrs. Orieta tried her best to calm him down but he ended up bolting out of the building and making a dash for a hole in the fence that separated the school property from the houses next door. I started to chase him but the moment I started running after him I knew he was gone. Today, there was some improvement. He stayed half the day with his mother staying by for a feeling of security. He's a big boy and I know he can do it, he just needs to let go of his fears. I remember the first day of school for me. I was pretty scared myself. I remember having a big knot in my stomach the whole way there and all I could do is look at the dash board. When we got to the school I wanted my dad to sit nearby where I could see him. For an excuse to get out of my desk and go over to him I would bring him things like glue and pencils. I don't know why I thought he would need them but that wasn't the point.
Needless to say, I can somewhat empathize with the tears of this little boy although I think he's a little more terrified than I was. Maybe his mother will be able to sneak away one of these days and he won't even notice. Hopefully I can make it fun for him and let him no there's love at school too.
